The Stove Industry Association (SIA) has announced the release of a comprehensive new report, The Socioeconomic and Wellbeing Benefits of Stove Ownership and Use, prepared by Clean Stove Consultants Ltd.
The report, authored by Dr Andrew Price-Allison, Dr Josh Cottom, and Dr Edward Mitchell, provides an in-depth analysis of the multifaceted benefits of residential combustion practices and addresses the often-overlooked benefits of residential combustion.
By synthesising data from academic publications, industry reports, and recent surveys across the UK and Europe, the report provides a balanced perspective on the role of stoves in modern households.
Key Findings:
Health and Wellbeing Advantages:
- Psychological Benefits: The report highlights that stove users report positive effects on their personal wellbeing, including relaxation and reduced stress levels.
- Physiological Benefits: Observing a flame can lower blood pressure and mitigate the risk of hypertension, contributing to overall health improvements.
Economic and Financial Considerations:
- Cost-Effective Heating: Stoves offer a low-cost alternative to gas and electric heating, providing cost savings, especially during energy crises.
- Energy Security: Stoves enhance preparedness and resilience, offering reliable heating during power outages and extreme weather events.
Social and Familial Benefits:
- Enhanced Social Interaction: A central fireplace fosters family bonding and communication, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
- Cultural Significance: The concept of “hygge” in Scandinavian countries underscores the emotional and social value of maintaining a fireplace in the home.
James Verlaque, technical manager for the SIA who oversaw the research, commented: “This study reveals that the benefits of stove ownership extend far beyond secondary heating. They play a crucial role in enhancing psychological wellbeing, economic stability, and social cohesion. Research into all facets of modern wood burning technology and techniques is critical to the ongoing dialogue around domestic combustion to ensure that debate is well informed and balanced.”
