Stove industry association awarded Sector Representation of the Year

The Stove Industry Association (SIA) has been named winner of the Sector Representation of the Year award at the prestigious Trade Association Awards which took place in London on Thursday 27th February. The Award, sponsored by the Department for Business & Trade, was given in recognition of the work undertaken by the Association and its members to secure an amendment to the New Build Heat Standard in Scotland to ensure that wood burning stoves could continue to be installed in new properties. The Trade Association Awards 2025, now in their 22nd year, are supported by the Department for Business & Trade, and recognise excellence, innovation and best practice amongst trade associations in the UK. To be considered for the Sector Representation of the Year Award applicants had to clearly demonstrate that the representative action taken for their sector was to tackle an issue of importance to the future prosperity and growth of its members, with the judges looking for “evidence of effective engagement that has harnessed the will and power of the sector to deliver something of importance both to the sector and Government priorities”. Andy Hill, chair of the Stove Industry Association, explained: “The SIA is very honoured to have received this award. The work undertaken in Scotland last year was complex and detailed, and involved engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including MPs and Ministers, all against the backdrop of a changing political landscape. Thanks to the combined efforts of the SIA, its members and the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps, not only was an amendment to the Standard was secured, the evidence we provided also prompted Scottish Government to confirm that it considered the combustion of biomass to be net zero carbon at point of use.” Emily Wallace, chief executive of the Trade Association Forum and one of the head judges on the panel said: “This was a brilliant example of the impact a trade association can have. The SIA reacted to a potential existential threat to its sector and using lobbying, media and members, it achieved tangible change.

World of Fireplaces 2025: The industry platform is ready for more innovation

The second edition of the World of Fireplaces (WOF) in Leipzig is just around the corner and promises to inspire the fireplace industry once again. With an increase in exhibition space, over 325 exhibitors from all over the world – including numerous newcomers – as well as leading representatives from business, politics and associations, the international trade fair from April 28 to 30, 2025 will impressively demonstrate why it is considered “the fireplace to be”. Innovations, networking and a varied program that focuses on the important topics of the sector make WOF an important meeting place for the industry. With a mixture of historical architecture, culture and modern infrastructure, Leipzig offers the ideal setting.  The World of Fireplaces (WOF) will open its doors for the second time at the exhibition grounds in Leipzig in just a few weeks’ time. From 28 to 30 April 2025, a comprehensive and varied program that meets the high expectations of experts will be presented alongside the attractive products. A lot has happened in the fireplace industry since the extremely successful premiere two years ago: new legal requirements and stricter regulations present companies with challenges, but at the same time open up scope for innovative solutions and technical progress. The industry is in a phase of change, and the need for exchange, inspiration and practical solutions is greater than ever. This awakening is impressively reflected in the number of bookings: over 325 companies and brands – an increase of 35% compared to 2023 – have already confirmed their participation. In order to meet the increased demand, the exhibition space in the exhibition hall has been expanded by an impressive 37% to 20,000 square meters. This development is welcomed not only by trade fair organizer Trendfairs GmbH, but also by the German Association for House, Heating and Kitchen Technology (HKI). Frank Kienle emphasizes its importance as a central B2B event.  “(…) With WOF, we are combining tradition and innovation, offering a central dialog platform for the industry and political discourse with the HUB. Personal exchange is at the heart of the event. In this way, we all work together to ensure that our companies and consumers act in a more climate-friendly way. (…) We are all looking forward to an exciting time at the trade fair!” Fireplace HUB: Associations act together for the industry – a strong signal  The Fireplace HUB forms the communicative heart of the World of Fireplaces and acts as a central platform for presentations, interactive discussions and networking during the trade fair. It not only serves as a stage for specialist topics and the exchange of experiences, but also as a key contact point for political dialog. The focus here is on personal encounters and direct interaction between players from business, politics and associations and trade visitors. It is a particular success to bring together important industry associations on this platform – a clear signal of the cohesion and strength of the sector. The participating associations include the German Firewood Association, the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ), the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), the European Fireplaces Association (EFA), the German Stove Builders’ Association (GVOB), the German Association of House, Heating and Kitchen Technology (HKI), the German Chimney Sweep Association (ZIV) and the Straubing Technology and Promotion Center (TFZ). Significant Decline in Emissions from Domestic Combustion in the UK

The latest Emissions of air pollutants in the UK – Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) report from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) reveals a significant decline in emissions from domestic combustion, marking a notable achievement in the UK stove industry’s ongoing efforts to improve air quality and reduce environmental impact. The report, published last week, shows that annual particulate emissions from domestic combustion have continued to decrease, falling below road transport emissions in 2023. This decline highlights the substantial progress made in reducing overall air quality impacts from domestic solid fuel and biomass combustion. Image caption: The adoption of modern stove appliances is a key driver for the reduction in emissions from domestic combustion (Image credit: Hunter Stoves). Emissions of PM2.5 and PM10 from domestic combustion have fallen by 17% between 2020 to 2023, with a 7% decrease shown in the latest data (2023) compared to 2022. Over the longer term, since 1990 there has been a 72% reduction in both PM2.5 and PM10 from domestic combustion. Commenting on the latest data, Andy Hill, chair of the Stove Industry Association (SIA) said: “This significant reduction in emissions from domestic combustion can be attributed to several factors, including the adoption of modern stove appliances and the use of better- quality fuel, and increased consumer awareness and education. The SIA and its members have played a crucial role in this progress, working collaboratively to create cleaner and more efficient appliances, and to promote consumer best practice.” You can visit the Stove Industry Association website here.

The Wood Burning Stove 101: Your Burning Questions, Answered

Expert from Europe’s leading wood burning stove manufacturer, Contura, shares troubleshooting guide for any proud yet puzzled owners During these long, dark and cold winter months, there is no doubt that the bright and warm flickering flames of a wood burning stove can bring a much-needed dose of cosy comfort to any home. And so, when proud owners come to light their wood burners, ready for a relaxing evening spent in the warmth of its crackling fire, it can be disappointing, frustrating and even stress-inducing when met with any obstacles or issues – whether it be unpleasant fumes, a lack of heat or unsightly blackened glass. Luckily, the below guide, compiled by Phil Wood, from Swedish manufacturer Contura, explains how such issues can often be resolved through a simple understanding of wood burning stove dos and don’ts.   Phil says, “By using and maintaining a wood burning stove correctly, owners will not only ensure that they get to enjoy their appliance at peak performance but will also benefit from its potential to provide an efficient, cost effective and sustainable domestic heating solution. “From using the right fuel and lighting a fire correctly to cleaning the glass regularly and booking an annual chimney sweep appointment, there are a number of simple tips and tricks that can help you ensure that you maximise the potential (and efficiency) of your wood burning stove. “It is important to note that not all wood burning stoves are the same, so always be sure to check the instructions in your product manual for guidance specific to your appliance. Similarly, if your wood burner is more than ten years old, we would recommend replacing it entirely with a modern, Ecodesign compliant version.” Read on for Phil’s troubleshooting guide to using and maintaining your beloved wood burning stove this winter and beyond… Using the wrong type of fuel can cause all sorts of issues, from producing an unsatisfactory fire (i.e. lacking heat and/or creating excessive amounts of smoke), to causing a blackened glass door or insert. The reason for this is that wet, treated, polished, oiled and waste woods tend to burn inefficiently. This can mean that a lot of unpleasant soot and smoke is produced, which can also lead to the blackening of your wood burner’s glass. To avoid this, fuel your woodburning stove using the best seasoned, dry or kiln-dried wood that you can afford from a recommended supplier. High quality hardwood species such as ash, oak, beech or birch make ideal options. And make sure to opt for wood with a moisture content below 20 percent which will ensure maximum efficiency and optimal heat and flame from your woodburning stove, while minimising smoke. Accredited British wood suppliers will have a ‘Ready to Burn‘ certification mark so look out for this label. Issued by the UK’s wood fuel accreditation scheme, Woodsure, this certification is assurance that suppliers can demonstrate that their logs have an optimum moisture content of between 12 and 20 percent. Be sure to store logs at home in a dry area with sufficient air flow to avoid any unwanted moisture retention ahead of burning them. There are multiple parts of a wood burning stove so, unsurprisingly, it is not a case of one-size-fits-all when it comes to cleaning – each stove part requires a different approach. Failure to clean your stove frequently enough and in the right way can have a huge impact on your wood burner’s performance, longevity and appearance.   It goes without saying that, before cleaning, you should only do so when it is completely cool. Firstly, the glass should be cleaned regularly. If done frequently, gently rubbing it with dry paper or kitchen roll will likely be sufficient to remove any soot remnants. If the soot does not come off with dry paper – which can happen when it has been allowed to build up over a prolonged period of time – try the following trick: dampen the paper (or use a damp cloth), dip it in the stove’s own ashes, and use this to gently rub the affected areas on the glass. Though it might feel counter-intuitive to use ‘dirt’ (ash) to clean, this simple method can be highly effective in cleaning your wood burner’s glass.   Opt for a steel brush when cleaning the cast iron parts in your wood burning stove’s combustion chamber (where the wood burns). The wire bristles of the brush make it ideal for dislodging and removing any unwanted byproducts left behind by your fire such as soot, ash, clumps of charred wood, and tar-like creosote.     When emptying the ash from the ash box, don’t forget to clean out the actual space where the ash box sits to remove any residue left behind. To minimise the fire risk when disposing of the ash itself, store it in a covered, non-combustible container (after making sure there are no embers left) for at least one week before getting rid of it. To clean the painted exterior of your wood burning stove, simply wipe with a damp cloth. No special cleaning products are required and some may even cause damage. The chimney, flue and stove itself should be swept professionally at least once a year. Having all the parts checked to ensure they are functioning correctly and that there are no blockages is crucial to troubleshoot any issues and keep your stove running efficiently and effectively, so be sure to get your annual chimney sweep appointment booked in. If you are struggling to get a healthy fire going in your wood burning stove, start by ensuring that you are using the correct fuel (see above). Next, consider the way in which you are lighting the fire. For the best and most efficient burn, it’s important to ensure it is lit correctly. For this, it is important to note that every stove is different, so be sure to always follow the lighting instructions in your product manual specific to your wood burner. As a general
